The tradition of associating specific flowers with birth months dates back thousands of years to ancient Roman and Greek festivals. However, the modern custom flourished during the Victorian era (1837–1901), when the secret language of flowers, known as floriography, became a widespread emotional pastime.
In an era where etiquette strictly discouraged public expressions of raw emotion, lovers, friends, and poets exchanged carefully arranged bouquets (often called tussie-mussies or nosegays) where every blossom, color hue, and stem position conveyed a distinct unspoken sentiment.
Why Does Each Month Have Two Birth Flowers?
Most botanical almanacs designate both a Primary Official Flower and a Secondary Companion Flower for each month. There are two historical reasons for this duality:
- Geographical & Climate Diversity: Certain blooms flourish early in the month in warmer climates, while others appear as hardy late bloomers in cooler northern regions.
- Symbolic Duality: The primary bloom typically reflects the month's outward social persona, while the secondary companion bloom reveals deeper, intimate emotional nuances.
